Pet Walking, Running, Hiking, Sitting, Play & More!
Give Your Pet an Adventure.
Professional pet care service specializing in dog walking, running, day hikes/adventures, pet sitting, play and so much more. Offering many customizable service options.
My name is Carley, and I grew up in both Colorado and Oregon in equal parts. When asked where I am from, I usually say that I am from the great state of Oregrado.
MY EDUCATION:
My background is largely in human behavior (Bachelors in Psychology-Colorado State University 2004; Masters in School Counseling and Human Service-University of Colorado 2006; 14 years practicing school counselor in Oregon-2006-2019). However, my side passion has always been caring for and being with animals.
SIDE STORY:
In fact, one of my proudest accomplishments as a school counselor was when I noticed an overlooked gap in pet therapy services between the elementary school level and college level. It was "something that just wasn't done in the high school setting." In my opinion, the need was SIGNIFICANT for our Oregon high schoolers with the stress and expectations that are put on them or they put on themselves. So I went after my goal (like a dog on a bone as my co-worker fondly described) of coordinating with a local pet therapy program in Eugene called PAAWS. Together, we were able to collaborate a team of 4 dogs and their amazing handlers to be available to our staff and students once a term.
As I stood with PAAWS in the field adjacent to the high school before our very first lunch visit, I smiled at each wagging dog sitting on their blanket in the grass next to their handlers and toys/water dishes and briefly had a moment of "paws" myself. Would the students come? Maybe I had been wrong about this. Maybe there was a gap in this service because there really wasn't a need.
But then the lunch bell rang. There was a short quiet moment, and then! Groups and clusters of students came spilling out of the front doors of the building, usually to head across the street to the fast food restaurants and coffee shops but instead were making a beeline for the dog party! Some came nonchalantly drifting, some full-on running in their school team jerseys, holding soccer balls or bouncing their large & awkwardly shaped band instrument cases against their sides.
Right to the circle of fuzzy, friendly, understanding, patient, comically wide-grinning and smiling dogs. The dogs with their flopping tails beating in anticipation against the warm grass on the side lawn in the quad. I spent that lunch hour directing the flow of traffic of staff and students to form lines and helped to maintain groups of 6-8 students at a time per dog, marveling at the impact the dogs were able to make by merely their presence.
In all my 14 years of working with students, from active shooter lockdown drills, to the occasional bomb threat, to the disruptive and LOUD fire drills (EVERY. SINGLE. MONTH.) to suicide and sexual assault trainings, to high stakes tests, along with the typical stress of just being a teenager, it was so great to introduce a new style of a warm/fuzzy to our students in a system of growing numbers of cold/pricklees.
I'm here to tell ya folks, pets are the answer.
MY MISSION:
I started ARF because in addition to becoming part of a pet therapy program in the schools, I wanted to:
Provide a wide range of flexible pet care services from a genuine, trustworthy, compassionate, caring, active, adaptable and experienced pet-centered person.
Member and insured through Pet Sitters Associates. Documentation available online at Pet Sitters Associates and will also be provided at first wag and sniff or upon request.
MY EXPERIENCE:
With a long history of pet care-from our childhood pet, Woody the Basset Hound from the Portland Humane Society, to my time volunteering at the Humane Society in Colorado Springs, to the many times I've been a pet sitter to neighbors, friends and family, to recently becoming a cat mom to two older feline friends, to most importantly adventuring with my beloved Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix, Bella the Wonder Pup (2007-2020)- I've always had a furry friend underfoot and in my care.
From low-key ground sniffing Bassett Hounds to high energy Frisbee chasing Border Collies; 8 week- old puppies to 13 year old senior sweeties, easy-going behaviors on and off leash to uh...shall we say the door darters and leash pullers of the world, I have experience and can adapt to meet the needs of all types of pets.
MY HOBBIES:
In my spare time you can usually find me running, mountain biking, hiking (currently training for a long distance thru hike), skiing, camping and volunteering (my favorite volunteer day so far has been paws down, the annual A Family for Every Child's Hero for a Day event in Eugene-see picture above of me dressed as Wonder Woman hanging out with Molly-my neighbor dog friend and also rock star pet therapy dog from another pet therapy program-FETCH).
I've recently started practicing yoga, cooking a whole lot more, and love reading or watching a good movie-either a good comedy or re-watching my favorite: Wonder Woman. Preferably all with a dog or cat nearby.
However, what really gives me joy is helping people care for their pets.

When are you available for services?
We are currently available for walks/runs/play times/house visits 7 days a week: mornings, afternoons and evening time slots. Typically we schedule our first morning outings as early as 5am and our latest evening outing starting at 9:30pm
For day care, overnight and multiday house sitting, please check the availability calendar above and then contact us directly to reserve your spot.
Planning in advance is highly recommended.
Do you take out (Run/Walk) any dogs, regardless of fitness and temperament?
Regarding fitness: for the run/walk service this is one of the primary objectives of the initial wag and sniff meet up/outing. We want to cater the activity to your pet. Having owned a Bassett Hound and a 13 year old senior with arthritis, we understand not all dogs are cut out for a three mile run. We do specialize in running, but that said, we are happy to take the senior sweetie dogs and the laid-back pups for walks and outings in the outdoors at their preferred pace.
Regarding temperament: for the run/walk service the most essential thing is that your pet gets along with other pets and other people.
Both fitness and temperament are important because eventually, we strive to pair your dog up with another pooch who loves to run or walk as well.
What does a visit look like?
In regards to timing, we begin the thirty or sixty minute session when we show up to your door, and stop the time when we arrive back from our walk/run/playtime. This means a) the more ready your pup is when we arrive, the sooner we can get outside and moving; and b) we don’t charge you for drop off time! During a run service, we spend about 80-90% of our time moving and about 10-20% of the time sniffing, marking territory, going potty, and cooling down at the end. Since smelling things is the doggie equivalent of reading the newspaper, we don’t shy away from adding the mental stimulation derived from sniffing. We also may take a slower pace and/or do more sniffing on warmer days. At the end of all our visits, we’ll make sure your pet has water, give Fido a pat on the head, and then be on our way, making sure to lock the door behind us. Finally, if you aren’t home, we’ll send you a summary of our outing.
Do you schedule a specific time for my pet’s outing?
We do schedule pets for specific time windows, but we’re working with animals and driving around town. Therefore, we request flexibility and understanding. We try to remain as close to our schedule as possible but occasionally we are delayed. We will always communicate to the best of our ability if we are significantly delayed or will not be able to show up.
It’s snowing out! It's raining out! Are you still going out?
Oregonians are a solid bunch, right? We go out rain or shine, warm or cold. Snow or not. We do take the following precautions though: if conditions are not conducive to the health of your pooch, then we’ll re-schedule the outing. We also bring plenty of towels with us to ensure your pet doesn’t track mud into the house when he/she returns home, but if you’re worried about after-effects of an outing in the elements, we are happy to reschedule.
Is there a charge if I need to cancel a service?
We understand emergencies happen so there is no charge for a canceled hike/walk/run/let out service, even if the cancelation is last minute. However, to avoid me showing up at your door for an un-needed service, it will be much appreciated if you’re able to give us as much notice as possible so we may be able to fill your spot that day. Housesitting cancelation policies apply.
Do I need to be home when you arrive for my pet's service?
The beauty of ARF Oregon is that we can stop by either when you’re home or while you are away. We can meet you wherever your busy days take you and your pooch. So if you have a busy day and would like us to meet you and your furry loved one just before your salon or medical appointment, we can meet you wherever you like, and we'll whisk your canine off to an adventure! No matter what though, we’d appreciate if you are home for the first visit.
What COVID-19 measures are you taking?
As of now when working with your pet(s), in an over abundance of caution, we will be following measures below:
Vaccinations. Hey, they're not just for pets.
Frequent hand washing
Glove wearing and/or using our own leads
Mask wearing when indoors
Maintaining six feet distance if/when around other people outside of our home
Mask wearing when outdoors and six feet distance cannot be maintained if/when around other people
Limiting our contact with surfaces/objects in your home
Staying home if we are sick
What pet vaccinations do you require?
Prior to our first outing with your pet(s) we will require that you provide documentation (picture or hard copy preferably) that clearly states the expiration date (not just the administration date) of the following vaccinations for each of your dog(s)/cat(s):
Bordetella for canine/kennel (Canine Tracheobronchitius) cough-100% required for ARF Oregon service. We kindly require documentation of administration and expiration dates for this vaccine.
*Some notes on Bordetella (Canine/Kennel Cough)-Many Veterinarians do not administer Bordetella unless they are asked. Please remind your Vet when you book your vaccination appointment.
This highly contagious ailment (most commonly caused by the bacterium, Bordetella bronchiseptica, or canine parainfluenza virus, or type 2 canine adenvirus) is as likely to be transmitted at the grooming shop, a dog park, a vet hospital, or even by the dog next door. For this reason, whether you are seeking our in-home day or overnight care services or our dog walking/outings, we absolutely require that your dog have an in-force Canine Cough vaccine.
Which version of the vaccine the vet prefers, is fine with us. (Some prefer the injectable "Bordetella", or lean toward the intranasal version Bordetella. Or some alternate between the two.) If this is your pet's first administration of the vaccine, we require that it be given two weeks before it's first service with us. If you are boosting an in-force Bordetella, we still would like a 7-day window between when the vaccine is administered, and when our first service occurs. This is because there can be an interval of a few days up to 7 days between an exposure and its symptoms. In addition, some pets immune systems get "lazy" following a vaccine.
We know that some veterinarians think that our fourteen-day rule is unnecessarily conservative, and others don't find cough vaccines as effective as they would like. Nevertheless, our experience is that the combination of in-force Bordetella vaccine, our regular sanitation procedures, our state of the art air purifiers, and our optimum fresh air practices has been effective in minimizing the risk of contagious coughs.
Having said that, we must remind you that no vaccine is 100% effective, and we cannot guarantee that your pet will not pick something up while your pet is in our care.
With respect to cats, there is no feline cough vaccine. We will respect your veterinarian's vaccination protocol. We recommend, but do not require a feline leukemia vaccine, because your cat will never come in contact with another cat's saliva. If you have a cat that goes outdoors, it should certainly get this one as it will likely encounter infected critters outside.
Distemper/Parvo-100% required for ARF Oregon service or note from vet explaining exemption (see note below)
Rabies-100% required for ARF Oregon service or note from vet explaining exemption (see note below)
*A note on Distemper/Parvo and Rabies vaccines-If you have an older pet, your veterinarian may determine that he/she no longer requires one or another vaccine. In general, we will respect their judgement in this regard if you provide us with a written statement of suitability from your veterinarian for boarding/services for our files.
How do I pay and what kind of commitment do I need to make?
We accept cash or check. If paying on a per-visit basis, please have your payment ready prior to your pet’s service or immediately after. If paying ahead in batches, ARF Oregon will notify you after each service your balance remaining in the "doggy adventure bank" along with documentation of each service logged during that “pay period”. Please have payment ready for your next batch of services prior to the first visit of that new batch or immediately following. Regardless, there is no commitment or contract. If at any point you’d like to suspend our service, we’ll refund your payment for any un-used services. You can choose to have us come over once weekly or multiple times per week or once a month to visit your pet, it’s up to you!

We begin each new relationship with a FREE meet-and-greet in your home and include a complimentary 10-15 minute outing for your pet dog.
The primary purpose of the Wag & Sniff-Meet & Greet, in addition to getting all parties acquainted to each other, is to have a conversation to ensure your pet(s) get the best possible care.
Before our meeting, we'll send you a survey covering information about your pet(s) including health history, allergies, diet/medication needs, favorite toys, best tricks, habits, quirks, likes & dislikes, activity levels and more.
During the first meeting we’ll review your survey together with you and ask further questions about your pet's: exercise and injury history, interactions with other dogs, anxiety issues (cats, squirrels, bikes, fireworks, etc.), and your goals with ARF Oregon. We’ll also discuss your goals for your pet. Finally, you’ll ask us any questions you may have, which aren’t answered by our FAQ section.
Once we’ve finished chatting about your pet, if you have a dog who will be walking/running/hiking or otherwise adventuring with us, ARF Oregon will take them on a complementary 10-15 minute outing from your house so we can get to know your dog a little more.
At the conclusion of our meeting, if you feel happy with ARF Oregon we’ll put dates and times in the calendar for your pet’s future adventures. If you realize ARF Oregon isn’t for you, we understand our services aren’t for everyone and it's ALL about fit, and you are under no obligation to book services with us.
So, a free outing for your dog and no obligation if you aren’t comfortable with our service?
